Wow! I can't believe that my time at the LRCE Library is coming to a close. Although it feels like I've been an intern for only a short while, I've actually learned about an incredible amount of different things and had plenty of opportunities to employ a wide variety of skills. Although I'm technically a circulation intern, I've also acted as a patron support representative, online promoter, and data manager. My only regret is that I couldn't have done more. However, I'm very pleased with what I've learned so far - my internship allowed me employ and refine my current skills, while gaining new ones. My most enlightening experience had to do with learning how to use the DESTINY interface: software that is used by a wide variety of libraries in the US. While I barely scratched the service of what DESTINY is able to do, I was able to use its most important functions by myself: running weekly reminders and utilization reports, adding new patrons, and renewing overdue items. When not on the LRCE website, I spent much time putting my already acquired communication skills to use through email correspondence. LRCE patrons had plenty of questions, but with the help of my supervisor, Cassidy Lee, I was able to answer all of them in an appropriate amount of time. While what I did was very basic, it laid a firm foundation for future, professional efforts. I greatly look forward to applying what I've learned as, perhaps, a local intern in a Pinellas library. I'm sure local librarians would find my newly found skills to be very valuable.
I still have a week left and I plan on not wasting a minute of it. There is still plenty to do, and I plan on getting as much done as possible. There are still patrons who need guidance and education, and of course, this blog to pay attention to. While my internship will be ending on August 2nd, don't expect the rate of my blog posts to slow down. I plan on running this blog right up to the end date, along with my internship efforts.
